Understanding OTDR Results: A Practical Guide for Field Teams
An OTDR helps technicians see the condition of a fiber link from one end. It can identify events, estimate loss and locate faults, but only when the test setup and trace interpretation are handled correctly.
Build a reliable test setup
Use launch and receive fibers when the link requires them, select a suitable wavelength, and allow enough averaging time for the distance and loss budget. Incorrect pulse width or range settings can hide important events.
Read the trace in context
Reflective spikes often point to connectors or mechanical splices, while gradual slope reflects attenuation. Compare results against the project acceptance criteria and document test conditions with every trace.
VAEYI test equipment is designed to support clear field decisions from installation through long-term maintenance.
